On 30 January 1957, the Sydney Morning Herald published a front page next to the photo and the name of its author, the Danish architect Jørn Utzon, a view of the winning project - designed specifically for the papers - completely out of stylistic practices, the sprawling shape of a cover made from something vaguely resembling a whole bunch of different times to the shell.
Apart from the specific sign of criticism that greeted the design of future great Australian drama, it appeared that architecture in any event, in its absolute originality, as an object unclassifiable.
Utzon è forzato ad abbandonare l'incarico in corso d'opera. Non potrà tra l'altro realizzare tutti gli interni e le vetrate. A rigore l'Opera di Sydney andrebbe considerata un'incompiuta.
Tuttavia, l'eccezionale fama di un edificio che, principalmente per le sue "vele", in meno di trent'anni dall'inaugurazione è diventato SIMBOLO UNIVERSALE dell'AUSTRALIA INTERA e dell'ARCHITETTURA MODERNA, autorizza ad immaginare, romanticamente, che il compito assegnato all'architetto si fosse già concluso quando trovandone quasi platonicamente l'essenza estetica, Utzon assicurò da ogni possibile contaminazione il futuro del suo capolavoro, consegnandolo ormai incontaminabile alla storia.
